Dale Watson (born October 7, 1962 in Birmingham, Alabama) is an Americancountry/Texas country singer, guitarist, songwriter, and self-published author[1] based in Memphis,TN. He champions 'Ameripolitan' as a new genre of original music and has positioned himself as a tattooed, stubbornly independent outsider who is interested in recording authentic country music. As a result, he has become a favorite of critics and alt-country fans.

Biography[edit]

Watson was born in Birmingham, Alabama and moved outside of Wilmington, NC when he was less than a year old. The family moved to Pasadena, Texas in 1977. He was one of four boys. Watson's father and his brother, Jim, were both musically inclined and guided what have become his longstanding musical influences. Watson began writing his own songs at age 12, making his first recording two years later. Soon after, Watson became an emancipated minor. By day he went to school and by night he played local Houston clubs and honky-tonks with Jim, in an aggregation called The Classic Country Band.[2]

He moved to Los Angeles in 1988 on the advice of Rosie Flores and soon joined the house band at North Hollywood's now-legendary alt-country venue 'The Palomino Club'. He recorded two singles for Curb Records in 1990 and 1991, 'One Tear at a Time' and 'You Pour It On and I Pour It Down', and appeared on the third volume of the compilation series A Town South of Bakersfield in 1992. Not long after, he moved to Nashville and spent some time writing songs for the Gary Morris publishing company where his first daughter was born.[3]

Watson relocated to Austin, TX, where he formed a backing band called The Lone Stars. He scored a deal with Hightone and released his debut album, Cheatin' Heart Attack, in 1995. It was greeted with enormous acclaim for the vitality Watson brought to his vintage-style material and performances and also featured a dig at mainstream country in 'Nashville Rash'. Follow-up album Blessed Or Damned appeared in 1996 and continued in a similar vein, as did 1997's I Hate These Songs. His next release, The Truckin' Sessions, appeared on Koch in 1998 and was devoted entirely to that distinct country subgenre of truck-driving songs and soon after, his second daughter was born. Watson attended truck driving school about the time his first album came out and later obtained his commercial driver's license; he often drives the band bus when on tour.[4]

Wiki

The singer is also featured in the Zalman King documentary 'Crazy Again', chronicling his (Watson's) breakdown after his girlfriend Terri Herbert died in a car accident in September 2000. Every Song I Write Is For You was released in 2001 as a tribute album.[5]

After going on hiatus from music in 2004, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland to be closer to his daughters, Raquel Cain[6] and Dalynn Grace.[7] Dalynn appeared alongside Luke Wilson, Johnny Knoxville and Knoxville's daughter Madison in Watson's 2007 video for 'Hollywood Hillbilly' .[8] Both Daughters are in pursuit of acting careers as both have attended UT Austin for theatre.

Watson returned to Austin in July 2006 and resumed playing regular gigs, including Sundays at 'Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon' and a Monday night residence at 'The Continental Club'. He is also a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry. He also was the focus of a 2007 bio-picture, 'Austin Angel'.

In 2011 Watson released a music video about Tiger Airways Australia after the company charged him $500 to transport a box of CDs which they then lost and initially refused to pay compensation.[9]

In 2012 he starred in Stephen King and John Mellencamp's musical, 'Ghost Brothers of Darkland County' and released The Sun Sessions (Red House Records).

In 2013 he released El Rancho Azul via Red House Records, which featured the single, 'I Lie When I Drink' (which has become his signature song), helped launch Ameripolitan Music, made his first appearance on Austin City Limits (PBS), and he bought his first little honky-tonk, 'The Little Longhorn Saloon' in Austin, TX (home of 'Chicken $#!+ Bingo').

In February 2014, his segment on 'The Sun Sessions' aired on PBS nationally. He appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, performing 'I Lie When I Drink' in early February. In mid-February he took part in the 1st Annual Ameripolitan Awards Show. In July, The Truckin' Sessions Trilogy was released by Red River Entertainment, and he bought his second small honky-tonk, 'The Big T Roadhouse' in St. Hedwig, TX (where 'Chicken $#!+ Bingo' is now a tradition, as well). In November he appeared on the NPR show Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!

In 2015 he toured in January with The Reverend Horton Heat as part of The BADDEST of The BAD Tour, in February he took part in the 2nd Annual Ameripolitan Awards show at The Paramount Theater in Austin, TX. In March, he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC) sitting in with the house band on a night the show broadcast from Austin during South by Southwest. In early April, his first performance on Mountain Stage (NPR) aired nationally. In late May, The Truckin' Sessions, Vol. 3 was released as a stand-alone mid-line title in the US via Red River Entertainment and in Europe via Continental Record Services/CRS. His new studio album, Call Me Insane was produced by Lloyd Maines (of The Flatlanders, etc.) and was released worldwide June 9 via Red House/Ameripolitan Records. The Call Me Insane Tour 'officially' kicked off on June 13 at The Broken Spoke, in Austin, TX. Also in June, he appeared as part of a segment on The Bachlorette (ABC) on June 15. The following weekend he & His Lone Stars began touring nationally to support the album's release, selling out shows in Wichita, KS, Lincoln, NE, Minneapolis, MN, Columbus, OH, Cambridge, MA, etc. Segments/sessions for Daytrotter, Music City Roots, Music Fog, Sirius/XM Outlaw Country, and Texas Music Scene also aired in July. In August, he and His Lone Stars toured primarily in Texas, with highlights being The Lone Star Beer Texas Heritage Festival shows in San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Austin. The film Two Step also opened in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA - in which Dale played a bartender. In September and October, he & His Lone Stars performed at The National Folk Festival, the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Fest and some club dates including T Selma, NC before beginning a West Coast run in Columbia, MO at Blues N Blues N BBQ Fest that included sold out shows in Huntington Beach, CA; Seattle, WA; Bozeman, MT; and Denver, CO. The film 'Lazer Team' (Rooster Teeth) premiered in Austin, TX - Dale plays a sportscaster. In mid-October, the new album Call Me Insane reached #1 on the Roots Music Report's Top 50 True Country Album Chart. It peaked at #3 on the FAR Chart in early Summer, #4 on The Alternate Root Magazine's Root 66 Chart in September, and #7 (twice) on the Americana airplay chart (in mid-August and again in mid-September). In October, he filmed a starring role in an independent short movie project called 'Yellow Rose'. In November he released a song, 'The Bottle Never Let Me Down' on a 'limited edition' Bloodshot Records vinyl-only 6-pack collection.

In 2019 he opened bar and restaurant Hernando's Hide-a-way[10] in Memphis, Tennessee alongside with his Fiancé, singer/songwriter Celine Lee.[11] Celine and Dale began exclusively seeing each other while recording her album Cat-Eyes with friend and multimedia artist Kacie Marie.[12] Celine and Dale also co-wrote her debut solo Album of the same name 'Celine Lee'.

Dale Watson married Celine Lee on June 13th 2020.

Real Steel (Japanese: リアルスティール, foaled 1 March 2012) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After winning his only race as a juvenile in 2014 he developed into a top-class performer in the following year when he won the Tokino Minoru Kinen and finished second in the Spring Stakes, Satsuki ShoSt Lite Kinen and Kikuka Sho as well as running fourth in the Japanese Derby. He reached his peak as a four-year-old in 2016 when he won the Dubai Turf and ran second in the Tenno Sho. He remained in training for two more years, winning the Mainichi Okan in 2017 and running third in the 2018 Dubai Turf.

Background[edit]

Real Steel is a bay horse standing 1.67 metres high, with a white star and four white socks[2] bred in Hokkaido, Japan by Northern Farm. During his racing career he was owned by Sunday Racing and trained by Yoshito Yahagi.

He was from the fifth crop of foals sired by Deep Impact, who was the Japanese Horse of the Year in 2005 and 2006, winning races including the Tokyo Yushun, Tenno Sho, Arima Kinen and Japan Cup. Deep Impact's other progeny include Gentildonna, Harp Star, Kizuna, A Shin Hikari, Marialite and Saxon Warrior.[3] Real Steel's dam Loves Only Me, a half-sister to Rumplestiltskin, was trained in Ireland but never raced and was exported to Japan after being sold for $900,000 at Keeneland in November 2009.[4] She was a granddaughter of the outstanding racehorse and broodmare Miesque.[5] She has also produced the Yushun Himba winner Loves Only You.

Racing career[edit]

2014: two-year-old season[edit]

Real Steel began his racing career on 27 December 2014 when he contested an event for previously unraced juveniles over 1800 metres at Hanshin Racecourse. Running on firm ground he won by more than three lengths from Liberator.[6]

2015: three-year-old season[edit]

For his three-year-old debut Real Steel was stepped up in class to contest the Grade 3 Tokino Minoru Kinen (a trial race for the Satsuki Sho) over 1800 metres at Tokyo Racecourse on 15 February and started the 5.1/1 second favourite behind Sunday Racing's other runner Duramente. Ridden as in all of his race that year by Yuichi Fukunaga he won by half a length from Duramente with Ambitious in third place.[7] Five weeks later at Nakayama Racecourse the colt started favourite for the Spring Stakes but in a slowly run race he was beaten a neck by Kitasan Black with third place going to Danon Platina. In the Satsuki Sho over 2000 metres at Nakayama on 19 April Real Steel briefly took the lead in the straight before being overtaken and finishing second to Duramente with Kitasan Black in third and the favoured Satono Crown coming home sixth.[8] The colt was then stepped up in distance for the 82nd running of the Tokyo Yushun over 2400 metres at Tokyo on 31 May in which he started second favourite and came home fourth behind Duramente, Satono Rasen and Satono Crown.

After a break of almost four months, Real Steel returned on 27 September for the St Lite Kinen (a trial race for the Kikuka Sho) over 2400 metres at Hanshin. Starting the odds-on favourite he raced in mid-division before finishing strongly but was unable to catch Lia Fail and was beaten two lengths into second place. On 25 October the colt was made second favourite for the Kikuka Sho over 3000 metres at Kyoto Racecourse. After tracking the leading group he moved into contention entering the straight but despite producing an 'impressive kick' in the last 200 metres he failed by a neck to overhaul Kitasan Black.[9]

In the 2015 World's Best Racehorse Rankings Real Steel was given a rating of 116, making the 139th best racehorse in the world.[10]

2016: four-year-old season[edit]

Real Steels's trainer Yoshito Yahagi

Real Steel began his third campaign on 28 February 2016 when he finished a close third behind Duramente and Ambitious in the Grade 2 Nakayama Kinen over 1800 metres with the unplaced runners including Logotype and Isla Bonita. The colt was then sent to the United Arab Emirates to contest the Dubai Turf on 26 March at Meydan Racecourse. Ridden by Ryan Moore he started at odds of 8/1 in an international field of fifteen runners. Godolphin's Jebel Hatta winner Tryster went off favourite, while the other contenders included Intilaaq (Rose of Lancaster Stakes), Very Special (Balanchine), Forries Waltz (Al Rashidiya), The Corsican (Arc Trial), Euro Charline (Beverly D. Stakes), Ertijaal (Cape Derby) and Flamboyant (San Marcos Stakes). Real Steel tracked the leaders on the outide as the 66/1 outsider Ghaamer set the early pace. Very Special went to the front 600 metres from the finish but Real Steel gained the advantage 200 metres out and kept on well to win by half a length from Euro Charline.[11] Real Steel's trainer Yoshito Yahagi said after the race 'I am elated and speechless. I am blessed with this horse and the people around me who have supported him'.[12] Ryan Moore commented 'He's a beautiful horse, he's got lots of quality. It was a big effort from the horse, he had a tough trip and was out wide but has toughed it out. He never runs a bad race. He's a very brave horse and has had to do it the hard way'.[13]

On his return to Japan Real Steel was dropped back in distance for the Grade 1 Yasuda Kinen over 1600 metres in which he started second favourite but was outpaced in the straight and came home eleventh of the twelve runners, six lengths behind the winner Logotype. After a four and a half month summer break the colt returned for the autumn edition of the Tenno Sho over 2000 metres at Tokyo. Ridden by Mirco Demuro he came from the rear of the field with a late run on the outside to take second place, one and a half lengths behind the winner Maurice. On his final start of the year Real Steel was made the 3.2/1 second favourite for the Japan Cup over 2400 metres at Tokyo on 27 November. After tracking the leaders he kept on well in the straight without looking likely to win and came home fifth of the seventeen runners behind Kitasan Black, Sounds of Earth, Cheval Grand and Gold Actor.[14]

In the 2016 World's Best Racehorse Rankings Real Steel was ranked the 34th best racehorse in the world with a rating of 120.[15]

2017: five-year-old season[edit]

Real Steel win the 2017 Mainichi Okan

Real Steel began his 2017 season in the Nakayama Kinen, as in the previous year, but on this occasion he ran poorly and came home eighth of the eleven runners behind Neorealism. He was expected to defend the Dubai Turf on 25 March but was withdrawn from the race when he bled from his nostrils after a training gallop.[16]

How To Play Blackjack Wiki

He was off the track for over seven months before making his comeback in the Mainichi Okan over 1800 metres at Tokyo on 8 October. Ridden by Mirco Demuro he was made the 4.8/1 third choice in the betting behind Soul Stirring and Makahiki in a twelve-runner field which also included Satono Aladdin (Yasuda Kinen) and One And Only (Tokyo Yushun). After racing in mid-division on the outside he made steady progress in the straight, took the lead 100 metres from the finish and held off the late challenge of Satono Aladdin to win by a neck.[17] Three weeks later he contested the autumn running of the Tenno Sho for the second time and finished fourth behind Kitasan Black, Satono Crown and Rainbow Line.

Real Steel finished 129th 2017 World's Best Racehorse Rankings with a rating of 117.[18]

2018: six-year-old season[edit]

On his first appearance of 2018, Real Steel was sent back to Dubai in an attempt to repeat his 2016 victory in the Dubai Turf and started at odds of 10/1 in a 15-runner field. Partnered by Mickael Barzalona he stayed on strongly in the closing stages to dead heat with Deirdre for third place behind Benbatl and Vivlos.[19] Barzalona said 'He turned in a good race, but he just didn’t have enough.'[20] In his second attempt to win the Yasuda Kinen on 3 June, Real Steel failed to reproduce his best form and trailed home towards the rear of the sixteen-runner field. He was retired shortly after the race when he sustained a torn ligament in his right foreleg.[21]

Real Steel's mark of 116 placed him 163rd in the 2018 World's Best Racehorse Rankings with a rating of 117.[22]
